I just came across this article on the Revolution Systems Blog that makes an(other) attempt at explaining why fewer but better developers are usually most cost effective than hiring more, but generally cheaper and not quite so proficient developers.

While this is not exactly a brilliant new insight (sorry guys), it is still something that seems to be ignored by many companies. But why is this, when people like Joel Spoelsky and others have been preaching this gospel for a considerable amout of time - mostly to the converted, I expect?

I'm working on a somewhat longer blog entry about software reliability and software failure modes at the moment which I'll hopefully manage to finish up within a week or so.

Oddly enough, Bruce Schneier's blog just had an entry on how standard consumer/business software is being used more and more in critical applications.
