The demise of Dr Dobbs Journal - hopefully exaggerated

In case you haven't been living under a rock, the blogosphere has been awash with people blogging about the demise of Dr Dobbs' print edition and the fact that it'll be folded into an Information Week column.


Unsurprisingly I'm not that impressed with this. I've been a long term reader of DDJ, still have some print issues from the late 80s/early 90 and it has been one of the magazines that has been an constant companion over the years. The other one, in case you were wondering, was the C/C++ Users Journal, which had been "folded" into DDJ a couple of years back. Back then DDJ was supposed to provide additional coverage of C and C++ but I didn't really notice that. It might have been there but there certainly wasn't the same extensive coverage that CUJ had provided...


It does however appear that DDJ isn't going away completely, only the print edition is. They've had the online/electronic edition for a while but I didn't really look at it much - I didn't really fancy downloading it onto one of my laptops so I could take it with me much I like I would've just thrown the print edition into my bag to read while I'm travelling. Now I would have to carry a laptop to achieve the same, and that's not really a good idea IMHO - if you want to increase your circulation, making your magazine harder to read might not be the step forward you've been looking for.


I hope that the digital edition is worth the additional effort it now takes me to read it; I'd hate to see one of my favourite magazines go away completely, but I'm not holding my breath. And if anybody has a suggestion what to replace DDJ with, please leave it in the comments!

DDJ is a very good journal, will be sorry to see it go. Must say though that betimes some of the articles were way over my head! I don't think I will be looking in too often on the online journal, I find the DDJ website horrendous!! I always had a fancy to try and get an article published in the DDJ, I had in mind an article about the use of Prolog in a practical setting, needless to say I never quit got around to it ;-)

About me

I've been programming since my early teens and like so many of us, I started Basic on the usual home computers like Atari 800XL, ZX Spectrum etc. I "turned pro" over 20 years ago and have been working as a programmer and consultant ever since.

During this time, I've been mostly doing C++ , writing anything from device drivers for various operating systems to trading systems for banks. I do have an interest in programming languages and strongly believe that the ability to work in multiple, different languages makes you a better programmer.

These days I run a small contracting and consulting company offering anything from short term analysis and advice to long term design and implementation work.
